As I recall there was a furor about a year ago (and that's like 7 in
net.years) when someone created a parody (nudge nudge, wink wink,
protected speech) by merging the soundtrack from a beer commercial
with the video of the Elian Gonzales incident.
Example: http://www.hacknaked.org/elian_true/
The owner of the video, AP, took offense, and threatened action.
http://www.techanddesign.com/elian/down.html
The result of the publicity from this action was the posting of the
offending file in its enirety to many usenet groups, with descriptions
as to why it was being posted (nudge nudge, wink wink ^2). Many, many
mirrors of the site were then set up by individuals interested in
protecting protected speech, which included both viewing and complete
archive download-for-remirroring capability. The example above is only
one such site.
In an interview after this occurred and resolved itself in its own
favor, the individual hired to spearhead the failed legal effort to
stop it made this statement:
"If the argument is who can talk louder, the Internet is always going
to win." -- David Tomlin, A.P. (re: Elian_True)
