    Hi,
At the last minute, it looks like I am going to be able to make it to
FSE in Yokohama this year (yipee!!!) I'm happy to see on the FSE web page
that I can actually pay at the door. However, I think it's going to be near
impossible to get a room anywhere near the event, I was wondering if
there's anyone on this list that's going, and with which I can split a room
    ?

    Dear Fellow Entrepreneur:

Don't knock it until you at least read this.

For the first time I have ever received a piece of email that actually delivered
    more than just empty promises.

I assure you, you will earn money each month, at home in your spare time, and
without sending cash in the mail for recipes.

Normally, I use my account to work from home and I don't play around, but after
recieving what I assumed was the same old email I finally read it because of
the Catchy subject line. It was so REAL it gave me goose pimples!

    I had to do this!

I promise you, if you set aside a little time each day on this program, you will
    MAKE MONEY.

This will produce results, but you can make a dime with this....until you get
    started yourself!

If you would like the details on this explosive new money making opportunity
    send a BLANK email to:
hh139excite.com with "Entrepreneur" in the subject line.

You will be forwarded the information immediately with "Entrepreneur" in the
subject line. So, be on the lookout.

    Vince,

Thank you for including me in your response. Making no attempt to mediate
your dispute, I tried to help a friend who wanted more information so I
forwarded it to others I thought might be able to help (apparently, we run
in the same circles). While my approach is from the public policy side, I
suspect we are all fighting for the same thing: stopping the government from
violating our rights and giving individuals more choices.

    Regards,
    Bradley

We have a solid team working on this as we speak and has been working
    on it for some time.

Unfortunately, this is not some productivity app which doesn't really
interface with the low levels of the OS. Those are comparatively easy
to port and Apple has generally released most of the documentation
    necessary to do so.

PGP interfaces directly with many parts of the low-level kernel of
the OS. Apple has not released documentation for most of that area
which is seriously hindering progress on areas such as PGPdisk and
PGPnet. (Actually, they did release "documentation" and 90% of it is
covered with the words "This will be documented in a later release.")

So, we are proceeding along as well as possible given the conditions.
To estimate a release date now would be folly, but you can probably
expect a full implementation of everything that currently makes up
PGP on OS X by the end of the year with sub-parts of it (perhaps
PGPdisk) being released in a public beta form maybe around mid-year.
That schedule is dependent on how fast Apple puts out the necessary
documentation/sample code and bug fixes/improvements for
    ProjectBuilder.

Recently I needed a way of generating an
    unpredictable permutation function of 32-bit
values, in other words, a block cipher with a
32-bit block. It was important for that
application that 32-bit values generated over a
period of time should not repeat. I searched
around looking for such a cipher, and couldn't
find one, not surprisingly since it would be
insecure in the face of a codebook style attack
(the entire codebook would fit into 16GB).

Anyway, that didn't change the fact that I needed
one, so I wrote one. I took Skipjack (Panu
Rissanen <bandelut.fi>'s version) and turned it
into a 24-round feistel cipher. It retains the
    F-table, the G-permutation and the key-schedule
(including the 80-bit keys), but it loses the
feedback register structure and the two different
    kinds of rounds.

Then for the fun of it I applied for, and
received, an export license from the Australian
Defence Signals Directorate that allows me to post
it on the Web. It's at:
       http://www.home.aone.net.au/qualcomm/skip32.c

It's freely available, and I hope it is of use to
someone else too. If anyone sees any problems with
    it, please do tell me.

The second beta release of OpenSSL 0.9.6a is now available from the
    OpenSSL FTP site <URL: ftp://ftp.openssl.org/source/>.

OpenSSL 0.9.6a is a bug-fix release of version 0.9.6, and currently
contains 43 documented changes. Among others, this release should build
on all Windows platforms, which 0.9.6 failed to do. Just as for version
0.9.6, this one comes in two variants, one containing the now well-known
ENGINE code and one that doesn't. The tar files are:

            openssl-0.9.6a-beta2.tar.gz
            openssl-engine-0.9.6a-beta2.tar.gz

The changes since the first beta are:

            - made ms/32all.bat and ms/16all.bat to work.
            - a few warnings under WIN32 fixed.
            - a missing module in the VMS build system was added.
            - a memory leak in the error data code was plugged.
            - the support for shared libraries changed as in 0.9.7-dev.
[N.B.: shared library support is still *EXPERIMENTAL* and not
really supported considering the big number of changes that
are coming in future versions of OpenSSL]
            - a PKCS#12 key generation bug was fixed.
            - a few typos were corrected.
            - more configuration possibilities for Unixware were added.

If this beta is shown to build and test correctly on all reported platforms,
there will be no need for another beta. Otherwise, there will be a third
beta. In any case, that next release is scheduled for Tuesday 2001-03-27. To
make sure that it will work correctly, please test this version (especially on
less common platforms), and report any problems to <openssl-bugsopenssl.org>.

To the best of my knowledge, this is virtually the same as a
technique of Silvio Micali's, US patent number 6134326:
    http://www.delphion.com/details?pn=US06134326__

    (There are related patents too).

The idea seems sound, but there's IP involved.

    Cheers,

    William

    Dear Friend,

Perhaps this might be of interest to you.
    If not, please disregard.

I thought I'd drop this one time quick note to let you know about an
EXCELLENT e-Commerce business which has enjoyed rapid and
consistent growth in the last 4 years. It may fit very well into your
    business portfolio.

This is the EASIEST and the BEST on-line business today, virtually
    a SELF-RUN ONLINE BUSINESS. It's TWICE voted as the #1 on-line
    business.

    *Christian, of Marion, OH. writes:

"I'm having 10 times the success with this business as
I did with my other MLMs that I tried. I have a personal closure
rate of about 80%. And I attribute that totally to the system that
you have created. It truly is the best company out there. Since
joining in August of this year, I have been approached by 3
distributors of other companies, including 1 co-founder, but
after explaining what I do in my business and how I work the
opportunity, I guess they've given up knowing that their program
is much harder to achieve success in."

If your current program demands that you sell products and
sponsor others you will fail 90% of the time! Put yourself in the
power position; win 90% of the time offering a program that
everyone wants to be involved with!

    DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE

National Institute of Standards and Technology

Public Meeting Announcing a Workshop for the Analysis of Modes of
Operation for Symmetric Key Block Cipher Algorithms

AGENCY: National Institute of Standards and Technology, Commerce.

    ACTION: Notice of public workshop.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

SUMMARY: The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
announces a workshop on modes of operation for securing data using
symmetric key block cipher algorithms, such as the algorithm specified
in the draft Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Interested parties may
suggest ideas or submit papers for discussion at the workshop,
including proposals of modes of operation, to the address below.

DATES: The Second Modes of Operation Workshop will be held on August
    24, 2001, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

ADDRESSES: The workshop will be held at the Holiday Inn Santa Barbara,
5650 Calle Real, Goleta, California. Details regarding workshop
registration will be available at the modes home page: http://
    csrc.nist.gov/encryption/aes/modes/. Suggestions, questions, comments
or submissions should be sent to Modes of Operation Workshop, Attn:
Elaine Barker, NIST, 100 Bureau Drive, Stop 8930, Gaithersburg, MD
    20899-8930, or to EncryptionModesnist.gov.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT: For further information, contact
EncryptionModesnist.gov or one of the following: Elaine Barker, NIST,
100 Bureau Drive, Stop 8930, Gaithersburg, MD 20899-8930; telephone
    301-975-2911; fax 301-948-1233 or via e-mail at Elaine.barkernist.gov;
or Morris Dworkin 100 Bureau Drive, Stop 8930, Gaithersburg, MD 20899-
    8930; telephone 301-975-2354; fax 301-948-1233; or via e-mail at
    morris.dworkinnist.gov.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: Block ciphers can be used as building blocks
for encryption modes and for other modes for securing data. For
example, block ciphers can be used in the construction of message
authentication codes, hash algorithms, and random bit generators. With
the advent of new block ciphers, such as the AES, there is an
opportunity to update such modes of operation for current and future
    applications and technology.
The purpose of this Federal Register notice is to announce a
workshop on modes of operation for securing data using symmetric key
block cipher algorithms, such as the algorithm specified in the draft
Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Prior to the workshop, suggestions
and submissions from the public to aid NIST in planning an appropriate
workshop and facilitate the comparison and analysis of block cipher
modes of operation are welcome. The workshop will aid NIST in
developing a standard or guideline that is secure and responsive to the
needs of government, industry, and the public. NIST will consider for
discussion at the workshop, at a minimum, the modes that were proposed
at the October 20, 2000 public workshop on this topic. These are
available at the modes home page, and NIST encourages public analysis
    of these modes.
The workshop may also consider other existing modes or their
generalizations, or other modes that are proposed in comments and
papers. It will be helpful to receive analysis and proposals for
variations of counter mode, arising from alternative methods for
prescribing the generation of counters. All suggestions received will
be publicly available at the modes home page.
In order to encourage a common framework for comparison, a workshop
approach to evaluate and analysis is available on the modes home page.
NIST believes that participants in the upcoming workshop would be
interested in comments that include statements regarding the
intellectual property and/or licensing requirements of any proposed
modes. Test vectors will also be useful, to provide analyzers of the
modes a means to check the validity of their implementations. Fuller
descriptions are available at the modes web site.
The results of the workshop will aid NIST's efforts to develop a
complete ``suite'' of modes of operation from which individual modes
can be selected to fit the needs of a wide range of applications and
environments. The recommended modes are expected to support the
eventual Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and other block ciphers.
Submissions for discussion at the workshop should be made early
enough to provide time to prepare the meeting agenda. Papers proposing
new modes of operation are requested as soon as possible, to provide
time for the analysis of the new proposals.

Authority: NIST's activities to develop computer security
standards to protect sensitive (unclassified) systems are undertaken
pursuant to specific responsibilities assigned to NIST in section
