fwiw, the iis5 mechanism david mentions is built into windows 2000. it's
a new option on a service. you can set what happens to a service on
first crash, second crash and subsequent crashes. options include: (a)
take no action, (b) restart the service, (c) run a file and (d) reboot
the computer. in the case of iis5 we run iisreset.

IIS5 on Windows 2000 has a resilience system built in where if the
inetinfo.exe process crashes it will automatically restart - the program
that does this is %systemroot%\system32\iisreset.exe with a
/fail=failreason
option. This causes an errorlog to be written to the event log and IIS5
is
brought back up. This is good for websites that require maximum uptime.
